Do I Need Planning Permission for a Shop Sign?
When signage needs consent in the UK, when it doesn't, and how to stay on the right side of the rules.
Many shop signs fall under 'deemed consent' and don't need a separate planning application โ but there are important exceptions, and getting it wrong can mean removal notices and wasted money.
Illuminated signs almost always need advertisement consent. Listed buildings and conservation areas have much stricter rules, and any sign on them typically needs consent regardless of size. Signs above a certain height or projecting over the pavement may also require approval.
Rules are set locally, so the safest route is always to check with your local planning authority before committing. As part of our survey we'll flag where consent is likely to be needed so there are no surprises.
We design signage with compliance in mind and can advise on what your project is likely to require โ though final approval always rests with the local authority.
